Freshwater/Saltwater Dividing Line
The
saltwater-freshwater dividing lines on rivers listed below shall be as
hereinafter defined, and all waters
of the rivers and associated tributaries, streams and estuaries lying
seaward of the dividing
lines shall be considered salt waters, and all waters lying landward or
upstream from all
dividing lines shall be considered fresh waters for purpose of licensing and
regulating commercial and
recreational fishing. SCDNR shall erect and maintain signs adequately identifying the
dividing line.
- On the
Savannah River, the old track bed of the Seaboard Railroad located approximately 1.75 miles upstream from the US Hwy 17-A bridge across the Savannah River.
- On the
Wright and Ashepoo rivers, the old Seaboard Railroad track bed.
- On the New
River, Cooks Landing.
- On the
Coosawhatchie, Tullifinny, Pocataligo and Combahee rivers, US Hwy. 17.
- On the
Edisto River, the old Seaboard Railroad track bed near Matthews Cut Canal.
- On the
Ashley River, the confluence of Popper Dam Creek directly across from Magnolia Gardens.
- On the
Cooper River, the confluence of the old Back River at Coast Guard Navigational Marker R82. Crab pot fishing, as regulated under Article 7 of Chapter 17 is
lawful in the Cooper River upstream to where the river forks at the confluence of the east and
west branches of the Cooper River.
- On the
Awendaw Creek, the North and South Santee rivers, the Sampit River, the Black River, the Pee Dee River, the Waccamaw River, and the Little River, the
line shall be US Hwy. 17.
- On the
Inland Waterway in Horry Co., the bridge at Nixons Cross Road where S.C. Hwy. 9 and US Hwy. 17 intersect.
- Shad, herring, and sturgeon
are regulated by saltwater laws, even when occurring in freshwaters above
the Freshwater/Saltwater Dividing Line - 50-17-20 & 50-17-805
